Who is the owner and artist Jennifer Arey?

Jennifer AreyA self proclaimed "Army Brat", I grew up all over the world until finally settling in Maine. There I finished high school and attended the University of Maine, Orono, receiving my BS in Business Management. In 1997, I married my high school sweetheart and later moved to Vermont to attend culinary school. In 2002, my husband and I welcomed our first child and I became a full time mom. We now have two children, both boys, and are having fun watching them grow.

I have always been active in crafts and have several interests that help express my creativity. Organic gardening, cooking, and, of course, quilting are just a few of my favorites. It is my love of gardening, and its similarities to raising my two boys, that gave me the idea for the name of my business - Baby's Breath Quilts, after the simple baby's breath flower.

If you would like to read more about me, please click on http://www.myspace.com/babysbreathquilts. There you can share comments, interests and any questions you may have.

You can also see my quilts at the Artisans Hand Craft Gallery in scenic downtown Montpelier, Vermont.

What is Baby's Breath Quilts?

Baby's Breath Quilts is based in Vermont out of my home, and really began in 2002 when I had our first child. At that time, I began sewing beautiful baby quilts and haven't stopped since! Through the birth of our second child (and those of my close friends!), I began to see that not all parents were lucky enough to be able to find beautiful, handmade quilts for their children.

So in 2006, I decided to become a professional quilter and started Baby's Breath Quilts to offer to parents unique, handmade quilts like those my children have enjoyed. Each quilt is made to be durable and easy to care for. My quilts have been vigorously “tested” by my two sons, ages 3 and 5, so I know what situations my quilts might be put through! And when your child needs his or her special blanket, you know that it will be ready.

Each quilt is created by me with the belief that each child is special and should be encouraged to grow into an individual, unconstrained by the “pink or blue” rule. So even though the quilts may be divided into “Boy Quilts” and “Girl Quilts”, as a general guideline I encourage you to browse the full, on-line catalog as many of the quilts will appeal to all children.

Why are Quilts a Symbol of Love?

Jennifer's mother JoanneI have been quilting for over 13 years and was first taught by my mother, Joanne. She was a nurse and an avid quilter known in her community for her charity quilts. Quilting helped bring us closer together and gave us an outlet during the difficult years of Joanne's cancer. Sadly, Joanne died in 2001. She was only 47 years old.

I still enjoy quilting, making many of my quilts on the same sewing machine that belonged to my mother. I feel that it brings me closer to my mother and keeps her memory alive. Joanne adored children and wanted nothing more than to be a grandmother. Since she never saw any of her grandchildren, quilts are one way that I believe my children can still feel their grandmother's love.
