Sewing the Quilt Blocks

I recommend having either a design wall or a flat surface available for these steps so you can lay out all of the individual pieces for the quilt top. It will help you keep track of where you are and help you pay attention to placement. Download the FREE quilt pattern for the Tumbling Squares Baby Quilt either as a Word document (260k) or as an Adobe .pdf (136k) file.

All seams are sewn with a 0.25" seam allowance. This is a standard seam allowance for most quilt projects.
Tumbling Squares Quilt Block DiagramStep 1: Following the Tumbling Squares Block Diagram pictured to the left, lay out all your cut squares and rectangles.
Fabric A & B PlacementStep 2: Take the (36) Fabric A 1.5" squares and the (36) Fabric B 1.5" x 2.5" rectangles and place them to the left of your sewing machine.
Stop 2-3 Stitches From the EdgeStep 3: Take (1) Fabric A square and flip it right sides together with (1) Fabric B rectangle. Sew down the side, stopping 2-3 stitches from the edge. Try to always stop with the needle down as this will prevent the fabric shifting when you lift the presser foot.
Assembly Line SewingStep 4: Take a second A/B pair and slide it under your presser foot until it touches the first A/B pair. Sew down the side of the second A/B pair, stopping 2-3 stitches from the edge.
Assembly Line SewingStep 5: Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until all (36) A/B pairs are sewn. This process is called Assembly Line Sewing and will cause all of the A/B pairs to be connected like little flags on a line. Clip apart.
Ironing the A/B PairsStep 6: Place the A/B pairs on your ironing board, A side down. Since we will be ironing the seam allowance toward the B fabric, you want the B fabric on top. In one hand, lift the B fabric away from the A and run the iron across the top of both fabrics. Do not pull the fabrics, rather let the weight of the iron push the two fabrics apart. On the back of your pair, both seam allowances should be to the B fabric. Iron all (36) A/B pairs.
Sew the A/B Pairs to the C FabricStep 7: Following Steps 2-5, match the A/B pairs with the C rectangles, right sides together, and assembly line sew them together.
Back of the ABC SquareStep 8: Following Step 6, iron the C rectangle away from the A/B pair. Your seam allowance should be toward the C rectangle and look similar to the picture on the left.
Sew the A/B/C Square to the D FabricStep 9: Repeat Steps 2-6, sewing the A/B/C square to the D fabric. Iron the seam allowance toward the D fabric.
Finished Tumbling Squares BlockStep 10: Repeat Steps 2-6, sewing the A/B/C/D rectangle to the E fabric. Iron the seam allowance toward the E fabric. This is your finished block!
