Step 1: On your design wall or flat surface, begin placing the Tumbling Squares blocks according to the pattern above. Pay special attention to how the blocks turn clockwise 90 degrees across the rows and down the columns.
Step 2: Flip all of the blocks in Column B onto their corresponding Column A block, right sides together. Lay them out next to your sewing machine, Row 1 closest to you and Row 6 farthest away.
Step 3a: Sew down the right side of each Column A/B pair, making sure that your seams are locking together - or pressed up against each other so they lay smooth. In the picture, I have moved the Column B block to the side so you can see how the seams meet. Assembly line sew the remaining Column A/B blocks.
Step 3b: If the seam allowance is not going in opposite directions and cannot lock together, you will need to pin the seams together so the seams match. Both seam allowances will still be going in the same direction, making a little "bump". Be careful not to sew over the pins - this can break needles and ruin the timing on your sewing machine!
Step 4: Repeat Steps 2-3, flipping the Column C blocks onto the Column A/B pairs, right sides together. Assembly line sew. Repeat for Columns D, E and F.
Step 5: Iron all of the rows, pressing the seam allowances on rows 1, 3 and 5 toward the Column A block. Iron rows 2, 4 and 6 with the seam allowance away from the Column A block.
Step 6: Flip Row 1 onto Row 2, right sides together. Sew, being careful to lock all seams or match and pin them like in Step 3. Repeat, sewing Rows 3 and 4 together, and Rows 5 and 6 together.
Step 7: Layout the Row pairs, making sure that they are still in the correct order. Flip Rows 1/2 onto Rows 3/4, right sides together, and sew. Flip Rows 5/6 onto the remaining rows, right sides together, and sew.
| Step 8: Iron all of the seam allowances toward Row 1. You now have finished piecing the Tumbling Squares Quilt top!
